Morning Session:

Emergency Management & Interaction with First Responders: What you need to know

Lots of people worry about what to do when there is an emergency. For a child or adult with a disability, their disability may impact communication with first responders, transportation, and disaster preparedness. Join presenter David Whalen of Niagara University’s First Responder and Emergency Management Disability Awareness Training for an informative session. Also presenting: Deputy Brian McCoy, Monroe County Sheriff’s Department; Kevin Chandler, Deputy Chief, Chili FD, and NYS OPWDD Fire Safety Representative; and, Sarai Mason, NYS OPWDD Emergency Management Representative.

Afternoon Session:

Quality of Life: Addressing disability discrimination and developing advocacy

People with disabilities are more than their diagnosis. Family members and providers need to understand developmental disabilities and how they can impact a person’s life. However, for a person to have a quality life, the people in their lives must see beyond their disability. Join presenter David Whalen as we discuss ways to support people by recognizing their talents and individuality, understanding advocacy and how to incorporate it into our work and lives, and advocating for full inclusion in community life.
