Health Profession Opportunity Grant - HPOG - logo

What is HPOG?

The Health Profession Opportunity Grants (HPOG) Program was established by the Affordable Care Act of 2010 to provide education and training programs in high-demand health care professions to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients AND other low-income individuals. ROC HPOG is a collaboration led by Action for a Better Community and joined by 12 partners in the Rochester area.

What are the possible career choices?

Participants may elect to train in a range of health care occupations, such as –

  • Dental Assistant
  • Emergency Medical Technician
  • Home Health Aide
  • Medical and Health Service Manager
  • Medical Billing Clerk or Medical Office Assistant
  • Pharmacy Aide or Technician
  • Phlebotomist
  • Receptionist and Information Clerks
  • Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Certified Nursing Assistant
  • Sterilization Technician
  • Surgical Technician

What supports and services does ROC HPOG offer?

Participants will receive support in –

  • Basic Skills/Soft Skills Training
  • High School Equivalency/TASC
  • Job Readiness Training
  • Child Care
  • Transportation Assistance
  • Navigation
  • Work-Related Resources such as –
    • Books
    • Supplies
    • Mentoring
    • Tutoring
    • Testing Fees
    • License Fees
    • Uniforms

Who is eligible to apply?

You must –

  • Be 18 years of age
  • Reside in Monroe County
  • Meet income eligibility requirements

Please note: HPOG is a study funded by the federal government which is being conducted to determine how these training opportunities help people improve their skills and find better jobs. During the study, all new eligible applicants will be selected by lottery to participate in these training opportunities. Not all eligible applicants will be selected to participate in these opportunities.
