Session 1: Introduction
What is Tourette Syndrome? How do you know if your child has it? What other neurological conditions might accompany Tourette?
Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects people of all ages, races, ethnicities, and genders. While it may become evident in early childhood or adolescence, it is a lifelong condition. TS is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, especially in communities that have been historically underserved or marginalized – whether based on income, race, or access to healthcare (urban and rural).
As more people understand TS and how to manage it or support someone who has it, together we can enhance the quality of life for all people with TS.
Session 2: Behaviors and Effective Management Strategies
Children with Tourette Syndrome often display challenging behaviors related to their conditions. Tics, ADHD, OCD, disinhibition, neurological rage or anger – all of these are common. And while they may be upsetting or frustrating to others in your child’s life (including you), they are most distressing to the child with Tourette.
Join us to learn effective behavior management strategies, ones that support your child without shaming or making it worse. We will also discuss the federal education laws that provide appropriate behavior supports in school.
Session 3: IEPs and 504 Plans for Students with Tourette
Students with Tourette Syndrome or other neurological disorders often benefit from and need supports through the special education services at school. 504 Plans and IEPs (Individualized Education Program) provide different levels of support.
