When Xstacia signed on to Project ESTEEM in 2019, she was adjusting to a new chapter in life. Having recently relocated from Florida after the loss of her mother, Xstacia held a high school diploma and a deep desire to build a meaningful future. She shared with her Workforce Navigator, Barb, that she loved working with children and dreamed of a career in childcare or healthcare—drawing on the focus of her high school studies.
From the start, Xstacia’s warmth and determination stood out. She quickly absorbed skills in customer service, networking, and interviewing during her pre-workforce training. Barb helped connect her to volunteer opportunities, job fairs, and even introduced her to a local women’s boutique, where Xstacia received professional clothing and a confidence boost.
Although she was eager to start working right away, Xstacia discovered that advancing in childcare would require more training. Remaining determined to gain experience and independence, she took on several roles in retail and hospitality, gaining insight into her strengths and preferences. Along the way, Barb remained a steady support, encouraging Xstacia to focus on learning and growth.
Recognizing Xstacia’s desire to explore healthcare, Barb helped her secure an internship in hospital housekeeping and guided her through the employment process. Xstacia stayed the course even with challenges along the way, applying Barb’s coaching on professionalism and communication. Her hard work paid off—she was offered a permanent role to train in nursing supportive services. Xstacia gave it her best effort and learned that while it wasn’t the right fit, she could always reach out for guidance and keep moving forward.
Through these experiences, Xstacia discovered that she genuinely enjoyed housekeeping. With newfound clarity and confidence, she applied to a different hospital, impressed the interviewers, and was offered a contract position in June 2021. This time, she felt supported, valued, and comfortable asking questions—a huge milestone.
As her career stabilized, Xstacia began working on other life goals. With Barb’s help, she secured her learner’s permit. Today, she’s preparing to take her road test and continues to thrive in her job.
Congratulations, Xstacia! Your story is a powerful reminder that the path to purpose isn’t always linear—but with persistence, support, and hope in action, every step brings you closer.
